Success is a very general phrase that includes many aspects of life. Since many definitions for success cover a part of success, it may not be possible to define success. Although definition of success is relative, the image of success does not change in a society. Since the history is full of successful people, this is a proof that success cannot be either unattainable or a fantasy. Therefore, success becomes a sense of duty rather than a dream because success is a result of process, goal-oriented and requires some crucial styles and methods. Success cannot be a dream because success is in our controls and it is reachable.
In first reason why success is a duty rather than a dream is that success is an end product of professional process which you have to find new motivations and drives to maintain your hard work and keep your stamina and energy up. Firstly, motivations are necessary to update yourself throughout the process of success. Motivations lead people to take action and risks to set up. Motivations can be positive such as power and money or negative such as anxiety, fear of failure and lack of money. In negative motivations, even if people do not want to have these negative motivations, they are the reason for people to set out. As it can be understood the quotation from the text titled “What stimulates the success?” written by Edward de Bono “It can motivate me to do something, but it is not what I am looking for.” In second negative motivation which is anxiety helps people to nourish themselves in their area. For example, if somebody starts a new business, they have something to lose form the beginning. As a result of this, there may emerge an anxiety because of fear of losing. However, this anxiety may help people to make decisions more rationally and carefully. On the other hand, people who have nothing to lose may take risks very bravely and may succeed. Therefore, lack of money can be a good motivation. Edward de Bono gives an example “when you do not have any money, you have got plenty of drive. (44)” Sometimes predicament situations can be shifted to positive stimulants by people who have very strong personality. Secondly, positive motivations are power, money, image improvement and making things happen. Since power enables people to communicate and reach with people easily, power may refer to persuade and manipulate people to do things that you want. This situation enables people to control over other people and “being important and noticed” (42). Power may occur where there are money and leadership. As it can be understood from “Leadership does involve power”. Power also may provide making things happen because they are related with each other strongly. That is, since power enables people to do things they want and making things happen brings power naturally, it cannot be thought apart from each other. To conclude, motivations whether they are positive or negative are requirements in order to reach success. Motivations are used in the process of success in order to reach it more easily and fast. Therefore, the sentence of success is a duty is more logical since everybody needs motivators and uses them in order to reach success.
The second reason why success is a duty rather than a dream is that success is goal oriented and requires some special methods and styles in order to reach the success. Firstly, people who are goal oriented set their aims and try to reach it. When they reach their aims, they become successful. Therefore, success is attainable because it is limited by the aims planned on. It cannot be said that success is a dream because there is no aim and result in the dream. However, the process of success includes aims and result. In the dream, there is a weak hope that dream may happen in someday but success requires more than that. It requires significant styles and methods that are crucial needs. Characteristics and methods which are applied by successful people in order to reach success are confidence, satisfaction of ego, hard work, efficiency and learning from failure. Initially, confidence is important whether it arises from knowledge or ignorance because confidence provides support for people to develop their skills. It also provides drive for people because, as Bono stated, confidence assure that “There is no one alive I cannot beat.”(30) As it can be understood from this quotation, confidence helps people to improve self-image and satisfy ego of people. Secondly, satisfaction of ego is vital to maintain success because creating and satisfying an ego gives a lot of drive to people. That is, when people satisfy their ego, they feel more relaxed and confident. Since people need new motivations throughout the process of success, satisfying ego provides them for people. Thirdly, stamina and hard work which are very common in successful people is to maintain a high level of importance in process of success. Hard work also compromises talents in some situations. For instance, if you do not have inborn some talents, with a lot of hard work you can develop your skills at the same level where talented people are. Although hard work is necessary for people to become successful, since successful people enjoy their work, “it does not seem like work”. (31) Therefore, hard work does not seem as a tiring and boring for successful people. Fourthly, efficiency which includes time management skills, timing and intensity of work offers to save time in order to use time their private life such as family. Efficiency also provides a stability and an assurance that all of works will be done in their due date. Finally, learning from failure may be the most important one because failure and success are bounded each other very closely. On one hand, success is a product of a process. On the other hand, failure is a significant teacher that teach a lot of things when people are in a predicament. If people who have had failures learn from their failures, they may bounce their bottoms to a higher level that can be reached. As Nietzsche said “What does not kill me, makes me stronger.” when people face difficulties, they have more experience than others who have not any failures. However, learning from failure is a helpful tool for people who can accept their failures because if people do not see their “failures” as a failure, there is nothing wrong in their approach to success according to them. To conclude, since some of characteristics explained above are essential for success, success requires some special characteristics and methods. It is a result of systematic effort and it needs to endeavor. Therefore, it makes more sense when it is a duty because duty also requires effort and endeavor similarly with success.
The reason why success cannot be a dream is because dream may not include anything rational and real. Dream is a just a hope that people imagine and do not expect it to be true. However, success requires hard work, stamina, serious styles and methods in order to reach it. Furthermore, success is attainable and reasonable while dream is unachievable. Moreover, successful people were in the history, so they will be in the future. This is a proof that success cannot be a dream because dreams do not happen frequently. However, history is full of these successful people. Success is also more about what is on the inside of the person than what you see on the outside. It is what they are made up of: a strong will, positive belief system, faith in a higher power, dedication, commitment, and a persistent, even stubborn nature. Their motto is “You can achieve what you believe and conceive”. Therefore, success and dream differs in many significant points as explained above.
In conclusion, success becomes a sense of duty rather than a dream is because success is goal oriented requires crucial motivations, methods, styles such as efficiency and learning from failure. On the other hand, dream does not require anything but an imagination. Success needs serious hard work, confidence, and drive. Since there must be a regulation for people who want to become successful. Success and duty are very similar because both of them are attainable, realistic. Moreover, people who want to become successful and want to fulfill a duty, they need to apply some methods and styles in order to succeed.
